Well happy had his vet visit and it is not totally positive...First he is infected with heart worms, so he will have to be treated. It is an extremely costly treatment, but worse, it is an extremely dangerous and sensitive treatment for the dog itself. It consist in two injection of "arsenic" within 24 hours from each other. During one month after the injection the dog will need to have full and total rest. After the first injection, the dog may develop an allergic reaction which would cause some serious respiratory failure... So it will have to be watch closely and we will need to have some cortisone ready. If the dog pass this stage, ten days later, he may develop an other type of allergy due to the toxins liberated by the worms when they die... This maybe deadly too, so again cortisone and antibiotic will be ready. Then 10 more days later, the dead worms will start to be absorb by the body... At that time, the dog must to be resting totally, as any excitement, fast move, run, etc... may cause the dead worm to break a part and cause some seizure to the dog.
The vet do not want to treat happy right now. She want to wait a while to make sure he gain back some weight and some strength. Injecting him with arsenic right now will kill him...
Not very encouraging, but we know the whole process as we already treated some dogs with heart worms. It is difficult and stressful though.
Happy also has ears canal infection, and some yeast inside both of his ears, so he is with antibiotics and a whole bunch of medicines.
Otherwise, he is eating and drinking a lot. He was totally dehydrated. Lucky though that he didn't had kidney failure after drinking mainly, certainly, sea water.
And also, he is... Happy !!!...

Poor Happy!
He's been through so much. We have had to treat dogs for heart worm too ... and also tick disease..all nasty stuff.
He's a survivor though so hopefully he will come through this OK.
I know you will do what is best for him. but most importantly he is home..where he should be..with people who love him.
